Maria Sonia Martin  Visual Artist
Maria Sonia Martin was born in Havana, Cuba in 1951.  She has been living in the United States since January of 1962.  In that year, she migrated with her sister, under the Pedro Pan (Peter Pan) Immigration Program, to the United States. She first lived in Manhattan, New York with relatives.  Later, that same year, she was reunited with her own family in Yonkers, New York. In 1968, her family relocated to Miami, Florida where she has lived since.  Maria Sonia also lived in Tampa, Florida from 1988 to 1992.      Maria Sonia received an Associate in Arts Degree from Miami Dade College (1983), Later, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art degree with High Honors from Florida International University, Miami, Florida (1986).  At FIU, Maria Sonia Martin studied drawing, painting and sculpture.  During the course of her education in studio art, Maria Sonia studied art history as well.  Through the years, Maria Sonia has continued her art education through her travels in Europe and the Americas by visiting some of the world’s most important museum art collections of western art.  This experience has enriched her knowledge in art, both from a critical and concrete perspective. During her career as an artist, Maria Sonia Martin’s work has evolved through various phases. Her work is very personal in nature and can be described as figurative-expressionist in style.  Maria Sonia Martin’s work has been exhibited widely at notable institutions.  In 1986, one of her works was awarded the Betty Laird Perry Purchase Award from the Florida International University Frost Art Museum.  Her work is also in the Holland and Knight Corporate Art Collection, as well as other public collections.
